Mulching Under Trees
Groundcovers act as “living” mulch and do not compete with the trees as much as turf. Groundcovers hide decaying leaves that provide the same benefit to a tree as does a thick layer of organic mulch.
Caring For Lilac
A soaker hose system or dripping garden hose that waters the soil directly is best so that the mildew-prone lilac foliage remains dry. After several years the decomposing layers of organic mulch at the base of the plant will improve the soil and it should be rich enough to support lilacs with out supplemental feeding.
Tips For Corn and Berries
Corn - To protect seedlings scatter extra corn seeds along the edges of a newly planted corn patch, or in an adjoining area or bed. The corn on top of the soil will sprout first, tending to distract the birds until the main crop of garden corn is too big to be of interest.
Control Cabbage Maggot With No Insecticides
The floating covers are very effective for keeping the fly that lays the eggs producing the cabbage maggot, away from vulnerable plants. The key is to be sure that the edges of the row cover are held down by soil or some device to prevent the insect from sneaking in under the cover.
Solving Riding Mower Maintenance Problems
If you have left gas in the mower over the winter, or for some reason have not used the mower for over a month, the gas may be bad. Modern gasoline stays fresh for only about 30 days unless it has been given a gas stabilizer liquid or powder.
