Don't Fight the Shade: Plants for Shady Areas
One of the most potentially difficult challenges for a gardener is dealing with a shady area of the yard or garden. As a point of reference, the definition of "partial shade" is that the plant receives no more than a few hours of dappled shade with no direct sunlight.

Ajuga
It develops a fast-growing, tidy mat of tightly-knit rosettes of colorful foliage, punctuated in the spring with stalks of perky flowers. Similar to many fellow members of the mint family, ajuga is sometimes invasive, enthusiastically taking over whole garden beds and sneaking into the lawn.

Well drained soil isa must for this plant, especially in late winter and early spring. Bugleweed can spread fairly rapidly since the stems can root when they touch the soil.

Remove old flowers after blooming and occasionally thin the planting to open up to better air circulation and prevent stem diseases.
